Tinariwen - Aman Iman

(7.5)

The story of Tinariwen is an epic one. The band grew up as nomads in the Northern region of Mali in the Sahara Desert. This alone is more epic than any other band I've ever heard of. The band members are freedom fighters of sorts, and formed the group in a refugee camp after being exiled from Mali. It's said that the band members share an collective 14 bullet wounds.

Their name mean "empty places", I like to imagine the desert as those empty places of which the refer to, as their music resembles the sound of one might imagine the music of the desert to sound like.

When I first heard their music, it sounded so familiar, even with the band signing in their native speak. The guitar lines were very familiar in particular. It sounded like a blend of Mark Knophler, Hendrix and Bob Dylan's later years. Turns out the band learned how to play guitar and make music from listening to unlabeled cassettes of these classic rock bands while they were children.

So there you go. And epic band with an epic story

Sounds Like
Real desert rock
